(Blessed with an unlikely victory, Carolina coaches were less than gracious)
Considering the circumstances, you could perhaps understand obscenities emanating from inside the Volunteer locker room.
But an off-color mocking of the Tennessee fight song from press box-ensconced Carolina coaching staff members within earshot of the credentialed media? Hard to believe a coaching staff could be that classless, especially after the Tar Heels MVP was arguably the Big Ten officiating crew referee, Dennis Lipski.
But that’s exactly what AOL Fanhouse reporter Clay Travis reported took place after the game.
From a postgame autopsy offered up by Travis today:
As Tennessee fans rained down bottles and other paraphernalia on the officials leaving the field, North Carolina’s coaching staff exploded out of the coaches booth screaming along in tune to Rocky Top: “Sloppy Top, Sloppy Top, you’ll always be a**holes to me!“
While Travis didn’t identify those UNC’s “screaming” staff members, the official Univ. of North Carolina pregame notes (pdf) identified offensive coordinator John Shoop, tight ends coach Allen Mogridge, defensive coordinator Everett Withers and graduate assistants Jerod Powers and Chris Van Horn as manning the Tar Heel coaches booth.
The UNC coaches can do whatever they damn well please within the confines of their locker room, but is it too much to ask for a modicum of professionalism while representing the school in public view?
