Sideline Stunner Samantha Steele Goes To Work

Like a chain smoker on a trans-Atlantic flight, we’ve spent the college football offseason shaking and sweating uncontrollably, unable to think about anything other than lighting up that first glorious college football broadcast of the season. Now we’re almost in the clear and are coming in for a landing to the (strained metaphor coming) Heathrow Airport that is this first football weekend of the season.

One of the few problems we’ve had with college football are the TV broadcasts. We’re not the only ones; hell, entire websites have been devoted to the insipid gaffe machines that populate the booths and sidelines of college football broadcasts. Thankfully, Samantha “The Next Erin Andrews” Steele of Fox College Sports is determined not to follow in those footsteps. She’s determined to actually learn the details about the teams she’s covering, and will go to quite the lengths to get them.

Report: ESPN Bidding To Make BCS Cable-Only

Get ready college football fans. Your dream of hearing Pam Ward call the Fiesta Bowl just got a little more realistic. And that playoff thing? Yeah, not so much. Especially with negotiations for four more years of the BCS going on.

The whole system may be a frustrating mess, but the price of showing the games is going up, even in this crappy economy. Fox is paying about $82.5 million per year to show all of the BCS bowl games other than the Rose Bowl, but ESPN is reportedly bringing the heat in an attempt to gain control of all five games.

Shock and Sparks Give Us Our First WNBA Brawl

On Saturday, Milka Duno threw her towel at Danica Patrick for yelling at her after a time trial for the Honda Indy 200, and we all called the minor flare up between the two female athletes a “cat fight.” But what happened last night in Detroit - the bench-clearing WNBA brawl featuring Candace Parker and Plenette Pierson - can simply be described as a “fight”. Or “heaven”, for those of you who have GIRLFIGHTS.COM as your homepage.

WNBA Fight 1

In the closing seconds of the 4th quarter, Parker and Pierson got tangled up, causing the former Tennessee Lady Vol to fall to the floor. While Candace was trying to get up, Pierson intentionally ran into her. Then as the kids would say, “it was on.” A melee ensued, with benches clearing, arms flailing, legs kicking and surely lots of really bad name calling. Former NBA bad boys Bill Laimbeer and Rick Mahorn even got involved. Three players and Mahorn, who threw Lisa Leslie halfway across the floor in an attempt to play peacemaker, were ejected.

You may recall that Mahorn was also involved in the Ron Artest incident in that very same building in 2004 as a broadcaster for the Pistons. If a fight breaks out in Detroit, Rick will be there.

Indy Hype Weighed Down By ‘Danica Rule’ Debate

Ever since Danica Patrick and her little 100-pound body drove into our collective consciousness in 2005, rival racing teams had been calling for a system that in effect penalizes cars with lighter drivers.

Earlier this season, such a rule was finally created. There’s one problem…nobody knows how it works. Read more…
