It’s been over a year since we first discussed windbaggy sportscaster Joe Buck’s attempts to develop a pilot for a talk show/variety show. Sports fans mostly rolled their eyes, wondering how the NFL on FOX’s self-appointed moral authority could possibly pull off the trick of being remotely funny or entertaining.
(Stand-up comedy from a stand-up guy. Or something.)
Such concerns, however, were no matter for a guy with the ego and pedigree of Buck. When a guy rockets up the ranks of sportscasters like Buck does, he generally gets what he wants, and this is no different. His show, “Joe Buck Live”, debuts June 15 on HBO, and AWFUL ANNOUNCING’s Brian Powell stumbled upon the promo. Verdict? Well, see for yourself.
Outside from his faux-news anchor delivery and coiffure, the promo actually flows pretty well. The promo doesn’t mention anything about what the show contains, but you can tell from the promo that it’s meant to have a lighthearted edge, a departure from HBO’s previous sportscaster show “Costas Now”. And hey, he says “ass”! Everyone loves ass!
Will the show be a success? Who knows? It will obviously depend on Buck’s ability to set aside his ego and frosty professional demeanor well enough to connect with guests and audiences. Earlier in Buck’s career, before assuming the role of FOX’s lead baseball and football announcer, he came across as a pretty likeable guy; if he can re-develop that persona, he’s got a good shot of sticking around. Fire up the DVRs.
