Spurrier, Gamecocks Owned by Vandy … Again

After spending 11 months stewing over a stunning home loss to Vanderbilt last season that precipitated a late-season tailspin, South Carolina marched into Nashville on Thursday night and finally atoned for its football sins with a throttling of the lowly ‘Dores.

Vanderbilt South Carolina

Or, maybe they didn’t.

Seeking a first winning season in 26 years, Vandy capitalized on a variety of Gamecock misadventures and posted a 24-17 victory despite producing just 225 yards of total offense. It was the Commodores’ first home win over a ranked team since 1992.

And, as is to be expected from SEC fans, Gamecock Nation is taking this all in stride.

From a post on GAMECOCKCENTRAL.COM’s message boards (sic just about everywhere):

for those of you that know me know i’m serious and for you DH’S responses that you don’t need me or fans like me or don’t let the door hit you in the a**, dont worry i want be back this year or even next . its been a nice roller coaster ride but i’m finished with gamecock football see you in the funny paprs cause it sure wont be in a championship game in my lifetime or yours…and for all you taters who want to broadast this on taternet your sorry a** team has 0 identity or heart either soooo see ya

Sadly, this post was edited twice before reaching its glorious final version (I guess he needed to add one more “o” to “soo” to really drive the point home).

And to add insult to blocked field goals and botched punt returns for the Gamecocks, Vandy coach Bobby Johnson took some time after the game to rub it in a little:

“I was surprised that so many people thought it would be real hard for us to beat them,” said Johnson, a Columbia native and former Furman coach. “We beat them last year and I don’t know why everybody thought they got so much better than what we were getting.”

Ouch. It’s still early, but when you’re getting called out by the coach of a school that lacks an athletic department, that doesn’t bode well.

At this rate, Steve Spurrier’s going to have to start bailing out on his morning round at Woodcreek Farms and, you know, actually go to work.
