All indications are that Cam Newton will be eligible to play for Auburn when the Tigers tee it up with Oregon at the BCS Championship Game in Arizona on Jan. 10.
But just when Auburn fans thought they could relax, a cryptic comment by head coach Gene Chizik last week indicated the barn door on eligibility issues for the Tigers hasn’t swung shut just yet.
The MONTGOMERY ADVERTISER reported last week:
Chizik said Auburn is “still getting some things cleared up academically” and isn’t yet sure if all players are in good academic standing.
Jay Coulter at the Auburn website Track ‘Em Tigers reiterated the lingering concern today in a blog entry:
There’s still no word on whether Auburn had any academic casualties that could cause some players to miss the championship game. Auburn coach Gene Chizik has been mum on the subject for the past month. You can bet the rumor mill will be in overdrive this week if Chizik doesn’t address the issue. Keep your fingers crossed…
As you might imagine, speculation is rampant all over the web about who the players with possible academic issues could be.
If any Auburn players are ruled ineligible for the BCS title game, an announcement would likely come before the team leaves for Arizona next Monday.

Rumor or true? I read that Cam Newton is allowed to take his classes online due to “he’d be asked for too many autographs”. According to the University, online classes must be available for all students or none & they aren’t in his major. Does anyone know if there’s any truth to this? I can’t imagine that Tebow, Manning, & many many others weren’t in the same predicament & still managed to go to class.

Victoryland race track and casino has its casino shut down due to rigging the slot machines to pay out to Auburn student atheletes, The Gaming commission shut their machines down in August. How screwed up can the NCAA get? I don’t know of any student athlete that has trouble going to class, as far as I know every student athlete is required to be in class and most have check ins with their coach and professors to make sure attendance is being upheld by the student. I guess Cam Newton is so full of himself that he excludes himself not to go to class because he is so popular he won’t be able to focus because of all the autographs. In 1957, Auburn was coached by “Shug” Jordan to a 10-0 record and was awarded the AP National Championship. Ohio State University was first in the UPI coaches’ poll. Auburn was ineligible for a bowl game, however, having been placed on probation by the Southeastern Conference.
Auburn went 11-0 under Terry Bowden in 1993, but was on probation and not allowed to play in the SEC Championship game.
Every Auburn national championship that has been awarded by ANY organization have been with teams under some form of probation.

Teresa, considering that my nephew is in a class with Cam and that others say they see him on campus, with books, all the time might suggest that he does in fact attend class. I am a die hard AU fan and a big SEC supporter. However, I have never seen such a horrible display of poor sportsmanship as the Alabama fans are displaying now. It should be shameful to the “good” sports from UA but apparently not. Name another school that printed a tshirt that says they “HATE” another school. No, I’m not like most Oregon fans because for most people, memories are short. But I remember. And while Lowder is still on the board and in charge of Auburn’s football team, it’s REALLY hard to see a reason to give Auburn the benefit of the doubt.
I lived in Alabama for a summer and half of the football season. I spent more than 24 hours there, but thanks—-there are people everywhere who are fans of football teams from schools they didn’t attend, but I’ve never met so many fans who haven’t even been to a GAME as Auburn fans, including in other states in the Southeast.
The Cam Newton mess will HOPEFULLY remove Lauder from the situation and Auburn’s football program, if they keep it. That’s what I’m rooting for. THEN I will reconsider my feelings towards Auburn as a school unwilling (or perhaps unable) to dump Lauder.
But until then, when people here ask me why I hate Auburn, I just tell them these two words; “Bobby Lowder.”
If Auburn was MY alma matter, I’d have an awfully big mouth about Lowder and how he’s ruining our football program and tarnishing our University’s name. To date, I haven’t heard of any Auburn alumni trying to do anything about the matriarchy that has ruined and could potentially destroy the entire football program.

I assure you I DO know Au history and remember well the Jetgate embarrassment. I won’t excuse Bobby Lowder. That is not a beloved name by AU fans. I have heard rumors but also know quite a few professors and other faculty at Auburn, including a relative who is a comptoller for the university. She says his role/influence has decreased significantly over the years. I would like to see him dissociated; no one person should have the kind of power he is rumored to have. To be fair, his name has not been sited in any legitimate news source surrounding the controversy of Cam Newton.
I’m sorry you encountered some ‘bad sport’ Auburn fans. I do think that most “bad sports or loudmouths” from any team are ones that have not attended the university or games. That is not the way we like to see our school represented.
Truly, what I want to see is a good match between 2 good football teams that shows good sportsmanship. And may the best team win. I’m not saying that is Auburn because I truly don’t know…of course I hope so! This has been the year I have been able to teach my son a lot about how to show good sportsmanship and bad sportsmanship. Unfortunately this included seeing a Bama fan throw a cup of beer on an AU fan after the Iron Bowl and getting to our car to find that someone had let the air out of all 4 of my tires. I do not have multiple Auburn paraphenalia (sp?) on my car; just 1 magnet.

Bobby Lowder IS AUBURN FOOTBALL. If you cannot see that, if your reasoning is that he was never convicted of anything with the football program (not exactly true, memories are short), then you are the exact reason I hope all this mess results in him being removed from the program. THEN we might be able to accept Auburn.
Cam Newton isn’t the story—–he’s the side effect. He’s a small part of an enormous problem at Auburn. He’s not the only one getting paid, he’s just one of many who work into Lowder’s Auburn program (I can’t imagine you were too excited when you heard you were getting a 4w21L coach on a 10-game losing streak from a Division II school last year).
If I were an Auburn fan, I would be BEGGING for the implications against Lowder to come out so that it can hopefully put an end to the 30-year taint cast over a once-legendary football program.
As for sportsmanship, I’ve been spat on, had windows broken, magnets stolen, seen graffiti on 200-year-old trees, all kinds of things at SEC football games including @LSU (the worst) and at Auburn and at Birmingham. The only places I didn’t were Athens and Columbia. It’s not special, no matter how much it sucks. But what do you expect from people who toilet paper their own historic landmarks? Talk about sportsmanship. Forget Fairley—–I’ve never seen anyone do somersaults on the football field other than Cam Newton. Cammy-Cam Juice? It’s ridiculous.

ya know, the problem i have with auburn fans is a certain lack of loyalty. Seems to me i remember three years ago, when gene chizik showed up at the airport,ummmmm, lemme see….5 people in attendance……2 standing with stern loooks on there faces…….two booing…and one hollering…”go home!!!!” Hard to believe that all the “fans” are so diehard and stand by their team and coach when things aint goin right. And this year…well they got Cam, so now all of a sudden its” war eagle” this and “go tigers” that. What a bunch of crap. The one thing about Tide fans is that they stick it through….no matter what!!!!! I mean, cmon…they cant even decide which mascot to go with…is it eagles? is it tigers?, is it dollars? its just so hard to keep up with…… I played a gig at a frat on the auburn campus once. That was by far one of the lamest parties i have ever had the displeasure to witness!!!!!! It’s a wonder that they can wipe after number two without someone either coaching em, or offering some money for someone else to come in and take care of it for them. The only thing good i can say about auburn is this….someone way back when had the sense to recruit bo jackson…and that dude is the real deal!!!!!! Auburn has been a cesspool since the 60’s. It’s a football factory that pumps rented mules through an academic dummy track, all the while proclaiming what a great academic institution it is.
In reality, it’s a plantation. It uses up poor African American kids and then throws them out the door, functionally illiterate.

I know that James Brooks played at Auburn for four years and left illiterate. What don’t know is whether any Auburn football player has ever been found to be academically ineligible, ever. I don’t recall it, but maybe it’s happened. Which leads me to my initial reaction to this story: If we are discussing “academic eligibility” aren’t we presupposing that its possible to be “academically ineligible” at Auburn? I don’t know if that’s a fair assumption:
My guess is that this is how it goes down:
Aubie administrator: #83 may be academically ineligible coach.
Cheeznit: Why?
Aubie administrator: Well he went to zero classes in the fall semester and slept through all of his finals. If we don’t do something he’ll have a 0.0 GPA and he’ll be ineligible.
Cheeznit: What can we do?
Aubie administrator: Well we’ll have to give him the opportunity to make up for his deficits by taking a test.
Cheeznit: What’s the test?
Aubie administrator: Well, we’ll ask him to spell “Cat”.
Cheeznit: (panicked look)
Aubie administrator: Dont worry coach, we’ll spot him the C and the T.
Cheeznit: What if he spells “cut”?
Aubie administrator: Well, that would be a B and he’d be eligible. If he spells “cat” he gets A’s. If he spells “cut” or any other english word he’ll get a B. All other results will earn him C’s.
