You know, there’s only so much I can take this week. Now sweet innocent figure skaters, who look like they should be revolving slowly atop ornate music boxes, are being accused of cutting and selling crystal meth. Nicole Bobek, who was U.S. Figure Skating champion in 1995, has been charged with conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, say New Jersey police authorities. Bobek, who lives in both New York City and Jupiter, Fla., was arrested in Florida last week and extradited to New Jersey. She is being called “a significant player” in a suspected drug ring, and police have arrested 20 people in the ongoing investigation.
According to Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio, Bobek was involved for at least a number of months in a network that distributed $10,000 worth of methamphetamine per week.
“This is not a situation where she was buying drugs to pass it on to another associate,” he said.
Bobek’s mother said she doubted that her daughter could have been involved. However, Jana Bobek also said her daughter liked to party and may be in trouble because of the company she keeps.
“If she is in some kind of trouble, she is probably in some trouble because she got in with the wrong company. I do strongly believe she would never do anything criminal,” Jana Bobek told The Associated Press.
“Did she party? Probably, yes,” Bobek’s mother said. “I know she’s a wonderful person and she has a very good heart and a lot of time that’s been taken advantage of.”

The 31-year-old was freed Tuesday after posting a $200,000 bond, and faces 10 years in jail if convicted.
