Sometimes working for a minor league team can be a real drag - literally.

Benjamin “Benny” Hill of MLB’s BEN’S BIZ BLOG reveals that the lovely(?) ladies(?) above are actually macho male employees of the Winston Salem Warthogs. Does this mean that baseball’s equal opportunity employment program also covers transvestites?

Possibly, but in this case, the on-field dress-up is all for a good cause.

Texas Tech Coach Leach Is No Fan Of DFW Airport

We get a kick out of Mike Leach because the Texas Tech football coach is never afraid to speak his mind. Whether he’s criticizing his own team’s poor play or being outraged by officials with purported pro-Longhorn sentiments, it’s always a joy to hear Leach lashing out.

And now Mike has revealed a new target of his ire - the Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport.

Yanks’ Posada Puts Off Shoulder Surgery For Now

Just when things are starting to turn around for the New York Yankees, Jorge Posada goes and gets himself put on the 15-day DL with an injured right shoulder. Worse yet, it not just some simple soreness - the Yankees catcher was discovered to have a torn labrum & rotator cuff damage. Doctors have recommended surgery.

However, Jorge doesn’t want to go under the knife just yet, not when his team is only 3.5 games out of first in the AL East.

Cards Trying To Keep Cowboys Fans Out of Home

The Arizona Cardinals are a perennial sexy sleeper pick for NFL fans of wagering on the over/under of total games won, while at the same time remaining a bastion of mediocrity with which the city of Cleveland can follow. (Just kidding, Cleveland, you’re swell.) Given all that preseason hype, combined with that needy desperation and Ken Wisenhunt’s actual ability to turn the team around, it seems odd that they aren’t selling all of their season tickets.

But they’re not. And that leaves a giant void in sales that is being crept on by Dallas Cowboys fans, who are trying to procure entry for the October 12th regular season ‘Boys-’Saw matchup. But, as YAHOO! SPORTS reports, the Cardinals are instituting measures for controlling the population of Texans inside the Pink Taco.

KU Players Not Fond Of Funny Mangino Fat Shirts

One of the more enjoyable stories of the 2007 season was the enormous rise of Kansas football, thanks in no small part to enormous coach Mark Mangino. And as the wins kept coming in Lawrence, shirts celebrating the grand girth of the KU coach kept selling. You’ve probably seen or at least heard of the some of the fat-focused fashions, such as “Our Coach Beat Anorexia” or “Our Coach Can Eat Your Coach“.

Sure, such shirt slogans may be all in good fun, but as Jeff Flanagan of the KANSAS CITY STAR discovers, some Jayhawks aren’t enjoying the fat jokes. (more…)

The Packers Are Basically Wiretapping Brett Favre

You know how sometimes you break up with a girl, only she refuses to leave your house at first? And then she finally leaves but ends up coming back to hang out? But when she comes back, she uses your phone to call some other dude and try to hook up, all while telling you how much she loves you? Yeah, that’s a pretty poor metaphor for what’s going on in the Brett Favre-Green Bay divorce case right now.

The point being is that the Packers, according to the MINNEAPOLIS STAR- TRIBUNE, are now reporting that Favre repeatedly called members of the Minnesota coaching staff. Odds are fairly good that he was not letting them know what a “great young prospect” they have in Tavaris Jackson.

PGA’s TV Ratings Whimper Without Tiger’s Roar

Despite the good story and impressive feat of Padraig Harrington winning back-to-back British Opens (as well as Greg Norman being competitive), Thomas Bonk of the L.A. TIMES passes on a shocker: without Tiger Woods, the PGA Tour’s TV ratings are taking a dive.

The details of the tournaments without Tiger, as far as eyeballs on sets go, do not bode well for the PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup.

A Slight Downgrade Is In Store for Ravens’ O-Line

It’s not that unusual for basketball players to make the jump to football. (See: Gonzalez, Tony, and Gates, Antonio.) People may also argue for Julius Peppers as well, but I see him more as a football player who happened to have dabbled in basketball.

And now the CARROLL COUNTY (MD) TIMES shoots up news of the latest hoopster trying to make the same transition to the gridiron: Joe Reitz (not seen to the left).

The difference between Jonathan Ogden, a sure-fire Hall of Fame mauling road-grader of a left tackle, and Reitz, a guy who hasn’t played football since high school? Likely negligible. (more…)

Cubs Fined $500,000 For Cheating In MLB Draft

They say if you’re not cheating, you’re not trying. Just ask Bill Belichick. Or Peter Cook. Well, after 100 years of losing, it looks like the Cubs have decided to try really, really hard - and have been fined $500,000 for it.

SPORTS ILLUSTRATED is reporting that the Cubs got the hefty fine after participating in a few underhanded dealings involving the draft, including failing to officially tell the MLB after a signing a player, and for putting players on the field without first obtaining MLB’s approval.

Master criminals, the Cubs are not. (If they were, they would have used bowler hats during their daring escape!) But they still have to pay up. Just think, that chunk of change could have gone into finally getting rid of the horrible urinal troughs at Wrigley!
