Randy Riggs of the AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN has what was likely the reason that Vince Young, after saying nothing about the 2005 Heisman Trophy for five years, suddenly stepped up on Monday and proclaimed, “I definitely want it.”
(Brown Eyed The Heisman ‘On Behalf Of Texas’? Hmmm.)
Mack Brown.
Brown credited himself as the reason V.Y. reconsidered accepting the award:
“I think Vince is trying to do what I asked him to do, and accept the trophy on behalf of the University of Texas if it’s offered. I called and I was adamant about it. I said, ‘It’s great for this university, it’s great for Texas, and I think in the long run it’s great for you.’
“I was a huge part of the reason that he agreed he would accept it, because I asked him to in honor of the athletic department and the football team and all of his teammates. I don’t know if he wanted it personally or not, but he would accept it because I asked him to for our program.”
Thankfully, college sportswriter Bryan Fischer was scoring at home and brought Mack’s wack crack to my attention. Scoreboard:
“I“: 10
“Vince“: 1
“We“: 0

How else do you expect him to relay the information? Use third person?

agreed with rickyb…perhaps he was deflecting possible criticism on his former player for commenting on an award that was presented 5 years ago…that he didnt win

so much for this being a team sport, huh?
Vince, you beat them in the Rose Bowl, a great victory for you & YOUR TEAM.
But now you want this award for YOURSELF. Nice leadership.
truth be told, it’s a trophy handed out by an independent group….they can do whatever they want with it.
$100 says someone associated with Texas football will end up at some point suing the Heisman trust!!!!

RickyB, NICE!! WTF is up with journalists nit-picking every detail of every word. Are you guys going to start proof-reading our comments for grammatical errors and writing up a sensational story on it? Most of us don’t give a shite about the 2005 Heisman any longer. Bush won it. The money didn’t win it for him. Young was the #2 player that year. End of story.

Let us not kid ourselves.
Mack Brown is one of the most arrogant people in college sports. He’s either got a lot of people fooled with this “awww shucks” demeanor or the media does a good job covering for him.

Let’s not kid ourselves: Vince Young is the greatest player in the history of college football, and it is a freaking crime he was not awarded the trophy in the first place. Mack was just trying to get a delayed sort of justice for the guy who obviously deserved the award.
Hook ‘em!!!

Mack Brown is a thin-skinned phony. Ultimate whiner. Always has been. Can’t take the slightest criticism. In this instance, he’s selfishly put Vince in an awkward position here. Young rightfully doesn’t want an award he didn’t win. Nobody would. So his old ball coach makes him look like an ass by forcing him to say he wants it.
What a fake douchebag

@EyesOfTX,
While Vince was a stud, I think it’s a stretch to call him the greatest, but it’s all subjective anyway. I would argue that Tommie Frazier is in the conversation for these reasons:
– Played in 3 national title games.
– Won back-to-back national titles.
– Heisman runner-up.
– 3X MVP in national title games.

Well you sure dont see Pete “the Cheat” Carroll coming out and making statements for Reggie. Im glad that Mack has the balls to call it like he sees it. Hes proud of his former player and is still looking out for him and the best interests of the program.

This is Mack being Mack — always trying to get the publicity regardless of whether it is appropriate or not. If someone from another school dies tragically, he is the first to try to get cheap press. The guy is a used car salesman.

Seem pretty obvious me that Mack Brown was trying to help VY out from a PR perspective.

You are an idiot. This is an article of either hatred or jealousy. I work with mack on numerous charity events in Austin and he and his brothers are great people who were raised by great people. Its not fake.
