1978 Video Features Jon Miller’s Hair … System?

Never one to get stuck on one sport, ESPN broadcaster Jon Miller has weaved a long, lustrous career in a variety of broadcast capacities.

(Miller also closet wildlife conservationist?)

From the video posted below, I myself learned today that Miller called NASL pro soccer matches in 1978.

This particular telecast featured Miller on the call for a match (or as Miller called it, “ballgame”) between the Los Angeles Aztecs and San Jose Earthquakes at Spartan Stadium in San Jose.

Watching the entire video, it’s astonishing to see how much Miller was able to cover that afternoon. (Scroll to 3:30 in the video.)

Perhaps to soccer fans Miller didn’t pull off the broadcast, but to the casual fan it’s that kind of versatility that has long placed the Miller atop his field.

He also had a BRIEF stint as the Red Sox radio announcer- circa 1981. Had the cheap station offered him an extra couple thousand at contract renewal time, he would have remained in Boston.

Hope Miller used scotch to recover from the fact that 1. he was covering professional soccer, 2. he was in the sports mecca that is San Jose, and 3. he missed out on covering some sweet Jai-Alai play by play.

He lifted that rug off a mannequin?

A shot and a goal… rebound, scores! … He scores!! Sounds like a hockey announcer. I follow MLS and unfortunately unless they hire a Brit things ain’t got much better..

That rug makes him look like a TV Evangelist. Thank goodness he never took it with him over to Baseball. Lucky for Jon, that if he only wore it covering Soccer, only about 37 people saw him wearing it.
